Skincare: Caring for Your Bodies Largest Organ - Skin
Skin is the largest organ of the human body, weighing in at almost 4 kilograms and covering about 2 square metres! Skin’s many remarkable functions and properties sometimes go unrecognised, but here at Mandala Dream Co. we know that our skin deserves to be loved and protected. To ensure your skin stays healthy, there are a few things you can and should do every single day.
Remember the Sunscreen!
First, protect your skin from too much sun exposure. You’ve heard this tip a thousand times before, and it can be easy to overlook, since exposure to the sun is such a common, everyday occurance. But every year, nearly 3 quarters of a million people are treated for various types of skin cancer in Australia alone. Millions more suffer sun-related skin damage. This answer is simple: cover up, hang out in the shade, use lip balms with spf as well as a sunscreen, and try not to use products containing oxybenzone. There are much healthier alternatives including better alternatives to these chemicals including natural minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. On that note, some of our very own favourite organic oils have a natural spf factor. Red Raspberry seed oil has a factor of 28, Wheatgerm oil 20 and our even our beautiful, nourishing Hempseed oil has a natural spf of 6-8.
We all know the many health hazards associated with smoking, but don’t forget that smoking causes damage to your skin as well as your lungs. (Not to mention your heart, your brain, and virtually every organ in your body.) Again, this is a piece of advice you’ve no doubt heard before, but it is so crucially important that it bears repeating. Smoking is a bad idea! If you don’t smoke, good. Don’t be tempted to start. If you do, it’s never too late (or too early) to quit.
Eat Well for Healthy Skin
Good health is built on a healthy diet. Eat whole foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables (preferably organically grown) and stay hydrated. Your overall health, including and importantly your gut health is reflected in how healthy your skin looks. Keep in mind, too, that sometimes food allergies and sensitivities can be reflected in skin outbreaks and itchiness.
It may not be the first thing you think of, but making sure you get a good night’s sleep is also important when it comes to looking your best. Stress reduction is important for many reasons (skin health being one of them), so consider adding regular yoga and meditation, or at least your thing, your ‘Me’ time into your routine. It doesn’t need to take long - even ten minutes a day of meditation can help ease anxiety, reduce stress, and change your outlook on the world.
Know What’s in the Bottle
Beyond those sensible basics, looking after our skin means we need to pay attention to what we are putting on our skin and what we need to avoid. At Mandala Dream Co our organic skin care formulations are made with certified organic ingredients of the highest quality, all certified cruelty free, like CBD oil, hempseed oil, botanical extracts, olive squalane, argan oil, camellia oil, calendula oil, rosehip oil, hazelnut oil, hyaluronic acid, and specific essential oils including our own native australian oils.
Each ingredient in our natural skincare, hair care and family care products has been carefully selected because it brings some active compound with beneficial properties to the table. Over the next while in future blog posts, we’ll go into more detail about some of our ingredients and why we’ve chosen to include them.
Hempseed Oil - Many Benefits for Your Skin
Cold-pressed hempseed oil, for example, has numerous benefits. An excellent antioxidant, this oil naturally plumps up your skin, resulting in a firm, healthy appearance. By increasing elasticity, hempseed oil can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and many notice a youthful glow returning to their skin with regular use. Even though hemp seed oil acts as a moisturiser, it does so without leaving an oily residue, great news for anyone with oily or problem skin, in fact with every use it not only balances your own natural oil production it will teach your skin to stay healthily hydrated for longer while it’s suitable for every skin type including even the most sensitive skin. If you suffer from mild skin irritation, hempseed oil has been shown to soothe inflamed face and body skin. Eczema, acne, rosacea and dry skin sufferers have also reported improvements in skin health and appearance after using products containing hemp seed oil.
Stop Using Soap Based Skin Care Brands
Many body washes, cleansers and gels are soap based. That squeaky clean, tight feeling that often follows after a cleanse is not a good thing, it simply means that you’ve stripped all the natural oils from this precious organ along with its natural bacteria balance leaving it bare and susceptible to all the things you don’t want, including premature ageing, infection and inflammation. Whilst over cleansing is a real thing you certainly don’t want to be sleeping in sunscreen, makeup, cosmetics, primers and the like, so the very best way to cleanse is to use an organic oil cleanser. After researching what was available in this category we formulated our very own Meraki Oil Cleanser. A little goes a very long way and at only $30 for 100 natural ml. it’s an absolute natural skin care game changer. Of course it’s organic skin care at it’s very best and without the exceptionally high price tag of the many we researched. We couldn’t believe that others were charging over $70 for just 50ml for oil cleansers made from 14 different oils, because let’s face it once it’s done it’s job most of it ends up down the drain. Combine our vegan, natural Oil Cleanser with these artisan made organic hemp cloths and eye make up removers available in our organic cleanser skin care kit and you’ve got yourself a cleansing routine that’s gentle, effective and cost effective.
Read Those Labels!
Just because a label says natural, eco, or organic skincare doesn’t mean the product inside is made from natural ingredients or is necessarily good for you or the environment. Read the labels carefully and try to avoid the following ingredients. Products containing the preservatives BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) should be replaced with those that use Vitamin E instead. Silicone and palm oil (unless it’s Certified Sustainable Palm Oil) at the very least, it should also be avoided, but you’ll never find those in our Meraki formulations.
Parabens, chemicals used as preservatives in many of the beautiful brands you’ve come to love, may have a cumulative effect and disrupt hormone regulation. Sulphates (used as cleaning and foaming agents) are found in many shampoos and are known to be skin irritants. The many hazards of microbeads in cosmetics and their havoc on our waterways and planet is a topic worthy of a whole other blog post!
Check out the Good Guide
If you are curious about exactly what ingredients are contained in a wide range of products, have a look at the Good Guide website, which rates a huge number of specific products. You won’t necessarily find the small, independent, local producers listed here, but it’s a good source for more widely available products, and you’ll get to recognise the undesirable ingredients very quickly. (Your best bet with local products is to ask lots of questions, look at websites, and become a good label-reader).
In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is supposed to regulate the labelling of products. The problem is that there are sometimes different names for ingredients and sometimes it’s not entirely obvious what you are getting. A safe bet is that if you can’t pronounce it or have no idea what it is you probably don’t want to be smearing it all over your body’s largest organ! Think edible beauty, if you could eat it safely you are on to a good thing. This goes double for anything you are using on children and infants but is certainly something to be aware of no matter what our age.
What’s inside the bottle is obviously important, but when you purchase your skin care products, support companies that make the effort to use recyclable, easy-on-the-environment packaging. Glass is recyclable and amber glass is tinted to help make sure that light-sensitive ingredients and products stay fresh.
Recycle Your PET Containers
Because of the risk of breakage, it’s not a great idea to use glass containers in the shower or bath, which is why Mandala Dream Co. uses PET containers for those specific products that we think you’ll use in and around your bath or shower. PET containers are made with as light a weight of plastic as possible and can be recycled. We use amber PET containers to maintain freshness and if you bring them back to us when they are empty we’ll provide a discount for those returns. The same goes for glass bottles. We then sterilise, steam, and reuse the containers. In general, it’s a good idea to work with companies that are careful about their packaging and that offer discounts if you bring back your containers.
Are The Brands You Use Ravaging The Planet With Their Packaging Choices?
Also be aware when you receive your products how they’ve been packaged for postage or shipping as that’s another telltale sign of what the brand is really all about. We recently invested in a Geami wrap machine which uses recycled cardboard cut into a honeycomb paper (sort of like an eco version of plastic bubble wrap without the cost to our environment). We have also discussed our stance on packaging with our suppliers and are ensuring they too think about the impact they are having on our planet. One of our major suppliers has already changed their packaging based on our not so gentle nudge. If you do receive environmental disastrous packaging do your very best to ensure it doesn’t end up in landfill, there are many ways to reuse and repurpose this packaging and we’ll do another article on just that subject in the very near future. You’ll be surprised at the wonderful uses we’ve been able to find for those nasties.
Every product we make at Mandala DreamCo. is created with love and attention to detail. We only use natural, safe, organic ingredients that we formulate by hand in small batches, so you can be sure that your skin is receiving the absolute best care and attention we can provide.
We are always delighted to see and hear about the changes our Meraki formulations have had on your skin and overall health.
