A Wondrous Ingredient from Mother Earth

Olive Squalane

According to the Australian skin care industry Olive Squalane is the ‘must have’ ingredient for 2018, at Mandala Dream Co our Meraki Hemp Formulations have included Olive Squalane from the very beginning in 2016.  Ahead of the pack yet again.

It never ceases to amaze me how complex and magnificent (and useful and effective!!!) Mother Nature’s gifts are. Olive Squalane is just one example of … billions? I don’t even know how I’d start counting! Let’s start here, with Olive Squalane and why we love to use it in Mandala Dream Co’s Meraki line of skin and haircare products.

What is Olive Squalane?

A lipid derived from olives, Olive Squalane is very similar to the lipids produced in our skin. As we age (starting in our twenties), the amount we produce naturally decreases. By using Squalane on the skin we can improve skin health and reverse some of the undesirable effects of skin aging. Used in skincare and beauty products, Squalane adds a smooth, lustrous feel, plumping up the skin and helping to regenerate damaged cells mimicking healthy human sebum.

Benefits of Olive Squalane

There’s nothing quite like squalane when it comes to soothing dry or cracked skin - it absorbs in quickly and immediately begins the process of healing and repairing. Using Olive Squalane softens rough skin and leads to firmer, moisture-balanced skin with fewer wrinkles and fine lines. One of the most desirable attributes with Squalane is that it doesn’t leave an oily residue. Your skin feels soft and smooth but leaves the skin without greasiness or stickiness.

We’ve found Olive Squalane to be helpful in reducing irritation from eczema, acne, and psoriasis and it is invaluable in the medicine chest for application on minor scrapes and abrasions. Olive Squalane is also helpful in easing the pain and irritation caused by too much exposure to the sun.

Why is Olive Squalane so Useful in Skincare Products?

Because Olive Squalane is quickly and easily absorbed by the skin, it makes an excellent carrier for other ingredients, taking them into the layers beneath the surface where they are able to work their magic. Improving elasticity and protecting against moisture loss, Squalane works well to improve the appearance and the feel of your skin.

Long-Lasting, All-Natural and Versatile, Olive Squalane Plays Well with Others...

On a practical level, just like virgin olive oil, squalane keeps well - it’s very stable and has a long shelf life. Made from a natural, renewable resource (olives) you can feel good about using it regularly. It’s mild enough to use at full strength, all on its own, but we prefer to blend it with other active botanical ingredients such as Hemp seed oil, Hemp CBD and essential oils..

What’s the Difference Between Squalane and Squalene?

The origin of squalene is from shark livers. For many years, shark liver oil - squalene has been used as a moisturiser in cosmetic products. Squalane (with an a) is a hydrogenated derivative of squalene and can be made from plants, and our preference, olives. Because squalene from deep-sea sharks is still cheaper to obtain than plant-based squalane, it’s still widely used to make cosmetics and that makes it all the more important to know the source of the squalane used in the skin care products you use.

Olive Squalane is Vegan-Friendly

Olive Squalane (like that used in Mandala Dream Co formulations) is suitable for vegans and anyone concerned about ethical and planet friendly skin care options. You’ll find Olive Squalane as a vital ingredient in our Meraki Face Serum, Meraki Revolution Serum, & Meraki Hair Serum. Check out this fun video about our Meraki Hair Serum with eco stylist Faye de Lanty. And, since you are here and have read this far, I’d like to thank you for caring enough about sustainable, natural alternatives to mass-produced skin-care products and for visiting our website to check out our formulations.
